Early Childhood

The Early
Childhood Center – comprising Nursery, PreKindergarten and Kindergarten
classes - is a component of Rosemont School's
new Academic Center that opened on December 1,
2008. This addition provides Rosemont School with a state-of-the-art
Nursery-PreKindergarten-Kindergarten Early Childhood Center whose
programs will enable children to develop, grow and progess at a
challenging pace. Our active child-centered classrooms and hands-on,
age-appropriate curricula motivate each child to achieve intellectually,
emotionally, and physically.
The Nursery program, which has been
offered at RSHC
for 12 years, can accommodate students in two
primary rooms and one "breakout" or multi-purpose room.
The Early
Childhood
program is based upon an 8-to-1 student/teacher ratio in math and
language arts. Teaching in small groups allows the teacher to
get to know each student and meet their individual needs. This
environment takes an interdisciplinary and multi-sensory approach to
teaching children with age-appropriate manipulatives and thematic units,
the children begin to explore the following areas:
- Pre-reading/Reading
- Math
- Social
Studies
- Art (Kindergarten attends classes in the Lower School
art studio)
- Science (Kindergarten attends classes in the Lower
School science lab)
- Music
- Religion
- Language Arts
- Physical
Education
- Computers
- Spanish (PreK, K)
Program/Approach
Through
hands-on experience, learning
through play, and small-group instruction, children develop the ability
to stay on task, to express themselves verbally and artistically, and to
be responsible members of a class. They also become aware of their role
in God's family through religious teachings and traditions.
Reading,
a cornerstone of the program, incorporates
phonics instruction and whole language techniques. Nursery and
PreKindergarten encourage reading readiness, and children are ready to
learn to read by Kindergarten.
Special activities and field
trips broaden the children's experience and provide them with
performance opportunities. Each year they host and entertain parents and
adult friends at activities such as Thanksgiving and Christmas
programs, teas, medieval feasts or fun events such as "Breakfast with
Dad."
