Procession of Peace

Rosemont School students process into Broderick Hall with "bricks" to contruct a wall of donated food while accompanied by drums and the singing of "Salaam Aleikum" (Peace Be With You).

Ghanaian eductor Dr. J.S. "Kofi" Gbolonyo leads Rosemont School students in song during a workshop in February.

Children from grades 7 and 8 linked multi-culturalism, the arts, and community service during a musical presentation of "We Are the World's Future at Rosemont School on March 4.

Children from grades 7 and 8 constructed a wall of donated, non-perishable food "bricks" in Broderick Hall, in the spirit of the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem.

The students built the wall during a rousing procession with drumming, singing the song "Salaam Aleikum" (Peace be with you), and a processional dance that was taught by the visiting Ghanaian musician and educator, Dr. J.S. "Kofi" Gbolonyo in February.

During two 90-minute workshops, Dr. Gbolonyo prepared Rosemont School children for a combined celebration with the Gesu School of Philadelphia and Holy Child Academy in Drexel Hill, but the event was canceled because of snow. The workshops and celebration were part of Rosemont School's Black History Month curriculum.

The bricks included colorful artwork and flaps containing words that were the result of thoughtful reflection by each student, describing what kept them from giving their best to the world. Examples included cancer, procrastination, poor eyesight, Grandfather's illness, racism, and dyslexia.

Seventh graders presented writings, including I Dream a World by Langston Hughes. They also included quotations from world leaders and sang "He's got the whole world in His hands." Grade 8 children focused on the statement "We are the Drum," citing the drum as a universal symbol and sound that can unite cultures.

The wall will remain on display for a week, then the food will be donated to a local food bank.
